From July 21 - July 25, comic enthusiasts and fan boys will descend on San Diego to see the best in comic books, movies, television, anime, toys and more

The granddaddy of all comic book conventions returns to San Diego once again for 4 days of comic books, artist signings, screenings, panels and other pop culture arts, in July 2010.

Comic-Con History

Comic-Con International began hosting the San Diego Comic Book Convention in 1970 (although it was originally called the Golden State Comic Book Convention). Each year, the convention grew, and now Comic-Con is held annually in July at the San Diego Convention Center, in San Diego, California (at least until their contract is up after 2012). Comic-Con International is a non-profit organization that also organizes Wondercon and Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco.

Comic-Con 2010 – The Basics

Comic-Con kicks off its 41st year with a preview night on Wednesday, July 21st. Since crowds have been so overwhelming the past few years, only some 4-day passes include admission to this special evening preview happening from 6pm to 9pm.

On Thursday through Saturday, the convention floor will be open from 9:30am to 7pm. On Sunday, July 25, hours will be shortened from 9:30am to 5pm. All tickets, including one day passes, for Comic-Con 2010 are sold out. (Because of demand many tickets are bought and then re-sold for a higher price.)

Pick up the Comic-Con Souvenir Book (given free to all attendees) for details about special guests. Also, be sure to grab the Events Guide, which contains information on all show schedules.

Comic-Con 2010 – Special Guests and Event Highlights

Over 4 days, Comic-Con will hold over 400 events including comic publisher presentations, panels featuring special guests and Saturday's annual gala, the Comic-Con Masquerade. Although the official Comic-Con schedule of events will only be available about a week before the 2010 convention, many artists and panels have been confirmed. Highlights include:

  • Many television shows will have panels and screenings at Comic-Con, including: The Big Bang Theory, White Collar, Hawaii Five-O, Chuck, Family Guy, Mythbusters, The Simpsons, Robot Chicken, Glee, Smallville and Supernatural.
  • Some of the most anticipated movies of the year will also have panels and screen previews, including: Tron: Legacy, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Green Lantern and Dreamworks' animated Megaminds.

Many special guests will also appear at Comic-Con 2010 including:

  • Ray Bradbury, the legendary science fiction writer is returning to Comic-Con after first appearing at the first convention in 1970.
  • Known as the guy who made the Dark Knight modern, Neal Adams and his sons (who are all artists) will appear at Comic-Con 2010.
  • Stan Lee was given the 2009 Comic-Con Icon award and will return to meet fans in 2010.

If you are looking to catch a preview of an upcoming blockbuster movie like Tron: Legacy, or get an autograph from your favorite illustrator or author (such as Ray Bradbury) or just buy a comic book and people watch then check out Comic-Con 2010 in San Diego. Comic-Con is definitely the place to be for pop culture lovers!
